Organizing a closet can feel overwhelming, especially when your brain is juggling a million things at once. However, with the right system, your closet can actually make your life easier, not harder.

Here’s a simple, ADHD-friendly approach that I regularly use when organizing closets with my clients.

  1. Empty & sort:

  • First, take everything out → this will help you understand what you actually have

  • Create simple piles: tops, bottoms, shoes, accessories, underwear...

  • Grouping items by category makes the next steps much easier

  1. Quick declutter:

Now it's time to make quick decisions. For each item decide: keep, donate, throw away and maybe:

Some simple rules:

  • If you haven’t worn it in a year → donate it

  • If it’s broken → throw it away

  • If you can’t decide quickly → place it in the “maybe” pile

Try using the 2-minute rule: if a decision takes longer than two minutes, move on and come back to it later.

  1. Use clear zones:

Once you know what you’re keeping, give every category a clear home.

This makes it much easier to find things and put them back.

What can you do?

  • Keep frequently used clothes at eye level

  • Hang clothes as much as possible

  • Store shoes on a low shelf or basket

  • Use clear bins for accessories

  • Keep seasonal clothes in a labeled storage box

  1. Add visual cues

Make your closet easy to scan at once. You can do this by using:

  • Labels on bins, shelves, or drawers

  • Color-coded hangers

  • Clear containers

When everything is visible, it’s easier to remember where things belong.

  1. Keep it simple!

An overcrowded closet can quickly become stressful.

Try to keep things simple:

  • Only keep what fits neatly in the space

  • Rotate clothes seasonally and store the rest in a labeled box

  • If possible, use a closet without doors so you can see everything easily

  • Keep a laundry basket next to the closet

  1. Easy Maintenance

Even a well-organized closet can get messy quickly.

The key is to make maintenance simple.

Try these small habits:

  • Daily 2-minute reset: hang clothes, fold items, put shoes away

  • Weekly check: adjust zones, tidy bins, quick declutter
