I have helped families and individuals create calm, functional homes, and I have also experienced the struggle myself. Keeping a home organized can feel impossible sometimes, especially if life is busy, kids are around, or ADHD makes keeping track of things extra tricky.
The good news? Small, practical steps can make a huge difference.
Here are my top 10 tips to help you get started:
1. Declutter first: before organizing anything, I always start with decluttering. Let go of what you don’t need and keep only what’s functional or meaningful. It’s incredible how much calmer a space feels when you’re surrounded only by what truly matters. I know it’s easier said than done, so start small: focus on one drawer, a single shelf, or a specific corner. Tackling it in smaller sections makes the process much more manageable.
Create four piles:
Daily / Current Life: Items you use regularly and truly need in your everyday life. These stay within easy reach.
Professional Life: Work-related items, documents, tools, or equipment that support your job or personal projects.
Let Go (Donate or Sell): Things you no longer use, need, or love. Decide whether to donate, sell, or recycle them.
NOT TODAY: Items you’re unsure about or aren’t ready to part with. Set them aside in this pile and revisit later, without letting them clutter your immediate space.
2. Ask the right questions: If you ask yourself, “Do I need this?” the answer is often “yes” or “maybe / one day.” To make decluttering easier, try creating clear categories for your items and then ask yourself the right questions for each category. This helps you make decisions without overthinking and actually let go of things you don’t need.
Would I buy this again?
Does this support who I am now?
Will I open this book / use this item in the next weeks or months?

3. Everything should have a home: organize items by category and keep them together in one spot. When everything lives in the same place, you always know where to find it and where to put it back.
4. Store visibly: clear bins, open baskets, and labeled containers are my go-to. When you can see what you have, it’s much easier to stay on top of things and prevent clutter from building up.
5. Label everything: Labels are lifesavers! Whether it’s kids’ toys, craft supplies, or your own things, I like using words or pictures to make it obvious where everything belongs.

6. Keep frequently used items accessible: I always suggest keeping daily-use items at eye level or within easy reach, and storing rarely-used items higher, lower, or in storage. It’s a small change that makes daily routines so much smoother.
7. Follow the No-Surfaces Rule: whenever I see something on the floor or on a counter, I pick it up and I put it away immediately. This simple habit prevents clutter from piling up and keeps surfaces clear.
8.Establish daily mini-tasks or a nightly reset: even just 5–10 minutes a day can make a huge difference. I recommend setting a timer and focusing on one zone, like a countertop, a shelf, or a drawer. Over time, these small daily habits prevent clutter from taking over.
Another option is a quick nightly reset: before bed, load or unload the dishwasher, tidy toys, clear countertops, or put things back in their place. It only takes a few minutes, but waking up to a calm, organized home feels amazing.
9. Keep flat surfaces clear: Counters, tables, and desks should be your clutter-free zones. These surfaces tend to collect things quickly, so it’s important to build the habit of clearing them regularly. Clear surfaces reduce visual stress and instantly make a home feel calmer. And because everything should already have a home (remember point 3), putting things away becomes easy: you always know exactly where everything belongs.

10. Make systems easy to maintain: the most important thing I have learned? Create systems that actually fit your life, not perfection standards, and don't look at picture-perfect Instagram posts. Simple, repeatable routines stick longer, and help your home truly support you and your family.
